Mr. Edwin M. Salonga, Chairperson of the Social Enterprise Development Partnerships, Inc. (SEDPI), motivated young entrepreneurs in a summit set up by the University of the Philippines – Visayas in Iloilo City. He spoke about social entrepreneurship, microfinance, and possible careers in the development world.

For social entrepreneurs, Mr. Salonga stressed the importance of innovation, impact, and sustainability. He also mentioned that efforts to help the marginalized sectors of our society need not always be directly provided to them. Partnerships and linkages are vital in coming up with strategic interventions to achieve large-scale and lasting impact to the lives of the poor. Drawing from personal experience, Mr. Salonga emphasized that appropriate knowledge and skills combined with passion to help are a powerful tool in leading a great career in development. Working for the poor does not mean that social entrepreneurs also need to be poor. Development work can also be financially rewarding.

The Young Entrepreneurs Summit is the culminating activity of a 3-day event that revolved around the theme “Social Entrepreneurs Breaking the Borders of Business.” It was jointly organized by the university’s College of Management and the Junior Executive Society. Other speakers in the summit include Ms. Maria Angela Villalva, Executive Director of Unlad Kabayan and Social Entrepreneur of 2007 by Ernst and Young; Mr. Jose Gerardo Guadarrama, General Manager of Biscocho Haus; and Mr. Joel Adrias, Vice-President for Operations of Injap Investments, Inc. (Mang Inasal).
